Grade level: Second Grade
Topic: Where I Live
Objective:
- The students will identify the city, state, country and continent that they live in.
- The students will locate the city, state, country and continent that they live in on a map.
Materials:
- Powerpoint presentation (state, country, continent and world maps)
- The Armadillo from Amarillo literature book by Lynne Cherry
- Worksheet Packet (wordsearch, state map, country map, continent map)
Teach:
- The teacher introduces the lesson by asking students what they think the definition of geography is.
- After listening to students’ answers tell students that geography is the study of people and where they live.
- The teacher will write the following sentence on the board, “I live in the city of ________, in the state of ____________, in the country of ______________, on the continent of____________. The teacher will explain to the students that they will be discovering exactly where they live after the story.
- The teacher will introduce the title and author of the book she/he is reading and explain that the armadillo is trying to discover where he lives throughout the book.
- The teacher will read the story, asking various questions throughout the book.
- Following the book, the teacher will ask the students if the armadillo did discover where he lives.
- The teacher, along with the students will fill out the blanks on the board by where the armadillo lives.
- Next, the teacher, along with the students will fill in the blanks on the board by where they live.
- After the students have identified the city, state, country and continent they live in the teacher will open the powerpoint presentation with the maps.
- The teacher will introduce and explain each map by locating the city, state, country and continent for the students.
- The teacher will ask follow up questions to ensure students understand where they live.
10. The teacher will hand out the worksheet packets.
- The students will label the city, state, country and continent on the corresponding map and complete the word search.
Technology:
World Wide Web-students will use the internet to look up the correct spellings of where they live and to use GoogleEarth
GoogleEarth-students will use GoogleEarth to find exactly where they live
Book on tape-Students will listen to the book on tape
Software and Hardware:
Access to the internet and browser
Access to GoogleEarth
Tape/CD player
Tape/CD of book
Skills required:
Teacher: Need to have knowledge of the internet and GoogleEarth and be able to help students use both.
Students: Need knowledge of basic computer functions
Reflection:
Students will be able to use the internet and GoogleEarth to not only know the names of where they live (city, state, etc.) but see exactly where they live on GoogleEarth. It will allow them to go beyond what a map can show.

Good technology integration sections on both the lessons. Good use of Google Earth and audio book. Great!
